Course Overview

A practical, hands‑on program that teaches participants how to understand, document, analyze, and improve business processes using industry‑standard modelling techniques (BPMN, flowcharts, SIPOC, value stream mapping). By the end, participants will be able to create clear, accurate process models and use them to support improvement initiatives. Certificate of Professional Practice will be awarded.

Day 1 — Foundations of Process Modelling

Learning Objectives
  • Understand what a business process is and why modelling matters
  • Learn key modelling principles and terminology
  • Identify process boundaries, inputs, outputs, and stakeholders

  • What is a process?
  • Why organizations model processes
  • Levels of process documentation (high-level vs. detailed)
  • SIPOC (Suppliers, Inputs, Process, Outputs, Customers etc.)
  • Introduction to modelling standards (BPMN, flowcharts)
Activities
  • Group discussion: “What processes do we interact with daily?”
  • Hands‑on: Build a SIPOC diagram for a simple process
  • Mini‑exercise: Identify process boundaries and scope

  • Completed SIPOC diagram
  • Defined process scope for the main case study process

Day 2 — Modelling Techniques & Notations

Learning Objectives
  • Learn how to create process flowcharts and BPMN diagrams
  • Understand events, activities, gateways, and swimlanes
  • Practice modelling simple and medium‑complexity processes

  • Flowchart symbols and rules
  • BPMN 2.0 basics
  • Swimlane diagrams for roles and responsibilities
  • Modelling best practices (clarity, consistency, granularity)
Activities
  • Instructor‑led modelling walkthrough
  • Hands‑on: Convert a written narrative into a flowchart
  • Group exercise: Build a BPMN diagram with swimlanes
Deliverables
  • Flowchart of a sample process
  • BPMN diagram (Level 1) for the case study process

Day 3 — Process Analysis & Improvement

Learning Objectives
  • Analyze processes to identify waste, bottlenecks, and risks
  • Apply improvement tools using the process models
  • Learn how to validate models with stakeholders

  • Identifying bottlenecks, delays, rework loops
  • Root cause analysis (5 Whys, Fishbone)
  • Process validation techniques
  • Introduction to Value Stream Mapping

  • Group analysis: Identify improvement opportunities

Day 4 — Advanced Modelling & Final Presentations

  • Present and defend modelling decisions

  • Process documentation templates
